The selection of Chinese source texts provides a thematic reading of key aspects of the Chinese religious world mainly from the tenth to seventeenth centuries. The themes were chosen with the aim of facilitating meaningful comparisons with ancient Greek religion and contributing to a better understanding of polytheisms. These topics are:
The selected texts come from a range of sources, including temple and mountain gazetteers, anecdotal collections, personal prose anthologies, hagiographies, dynastic histories, Daoist liturgical collections, and inscriptions. Texts under each theme are arranged in a chronological order according to the time period of their content instead of their time of compilation.
